Say What?
If you’re anything like your editor, you will agree that DIY should be a four letter word. But so much can be done around the house without physical pain, stress or burst water pipes ruining the party; you just need the right advice. Janice Anderssen, who does it herself for a living, answers some of the most popular home decoration questions.
What colour should I paint a room?
Choosing colour is a matter of personal choice and preference. It's also about the mood or atmosphere that you want to create. For more information on colour use a Virtual Painter, such as that on the www.ProminentPaints.co.za website.
How do I get rid of mildew?
Firstly, you need to find out what is causing the problem. It could be a leaking pipe, water collecting against an exterior wall, or even too much moisture in a room (bathroom, laundry, etc). Once you have identified and rectified the cause of the problem, a mixture of bleach and water will remove any residue.
Which are the best power tools to buy?
I only use Bosch power tools, and although they might cost me a little more, at the end of the day I know that I can rely on my tools to be ready for use when I need them due to their Lithium-ion batteries. Visit www.bosch.co.za for more information.
How do I clean a suede or leather lounge suite?
A regular dusting for leather, and using a soft brush attachment on your vacuum for suede, is all that is needed to keep your suite in good condition. Don't use household cleaners on leather or suede. Homemade leather conditioner: 1 teaspoon of household ammonia, 4 teaspoons of white vinegar, 2 cups water. Mix ingredients together. Apply mixture, dry with a soft cloth, and then wipe on castor oil, using a soft cloth. Rub on leather shoe cream in the appropriate colour. Buff well.
