Fleet Foxes by Fleet Foxes
Within the now ageing folk revival there are hundreds of examples of rehash but precious few of reinvention. Fleet Foxes are masters of the latter. Their debut album doffs its hat to Early 60s English folk and, occasionally, to the more polished elaboration on that genre by such bands as Fleetwood Mac, but that's where the comparison ends. This is a truly original album, full of hypnotic vocal harmonies, perfect arrangements and vivid storytelling. Everywhere, there are the sort of infectious hooks that stay with you for days – not because you can't get them out of your head, but because you want them there. Fleet Foxes, from Seattle, describes its own sound as “baroque, harmonic pop jams”, but this band, and their beautiful record, seem from another planet altogether.
