Extra Virgin - March 2010

InterviewWith just under four months to go to You Know What, Extra Virgin spoke to Terence Lapidus, CEO of Ultimate Holiday Planner about getting around, getting away and getting it for a steal during the month of madness.

What advice do you have for locals who want to get away during the World Cup?

World Cup month is the time to take a break in a quiet little country town. There is plenty of cheap accommodation within SA during the World Cup in off-beat places. Neighbouring countries and islands also have excellent specials at the moment. We help plan trips for people for free, with no markups nor booking fees.

Where are you getting the majority of your bookings?

Through the internet, and mostly for Cape Town and Joburg, obviously.

Have you had any outrageous requests?

We got one very big request for a company from Angola. One of the options they may take comes with an Aston Martin for the entire month. We also get many requests to find three star accommodation for under R200 a night.

What’s going to be the best way of getting around during the tournament?

Definitely the integrated rapid transport system. Otherwise, scooters, bikes and walking. Unfortunately South Africa doesn’t have very bicycle friendly roads. Driving a car is going to be a huge mission, so try and avoid it and car pool if possible.

Would you advise people to rent out their apartment for the tournament?

Very, very good idea. Affordable accommodation is scarce in all of the hosting cities and there is lack of accommodation nationwide. I’d make plans to move in with friends or family for the month, rent out your apartment through us and others and make good money to travel.

Is it going to be as mad as expected?

Organised chaos. People need to relax though and I think they will. All the visitors to our cities will be on a HUGE buzz and this is very infectious. I hope to see everyone getting a little mad during the World Cup.

Is there anywhere cheap left to go?

Yes, mostly self catering apartments and the odd backpackers. Best bet now is to stay up to 30km from the stadium and take public transport into the city and stadiums, if you want to stick to your budget that is.
