Life doesn't always play by the rules, especially when you're on the road. That's why knowing what to do after a car accident can really help make an unexpected experience that much more manageable.

Safety first

The first thing you need to do after an accident is stop your car, put your hazards on and move over to a safer space. Then make sure that everyone involved is alright. Just remember to keep one important thing in mind at all times – stay calm. It's easy to lose your temper, especially when an accident isn't your fault, but keeping your cool is the best way to get everything resolved quickly.

Details, details, details

After any road accident, always try to get as much information as you can. Make sure you take down the other driver's name, surname, telephone numbers, ID number, physical address and insurance details. You'll also need all their vehicle details, such as the make, model, colour and licence plate, as well as their registration number. (It's a good idea to keep an 'accident pack' in your car with a notebook and pen.) If anyone witnessed the accident, ask them for their name and contact details. Plus, be sure to take photos of the accident scene, and make a note of the location, date and time that it occurred.

What comes next

As a Virgin Money Insurance client, if your car needs to be towed, call 0860 10 45 30 for free towing and storage, and remember to ask for a reference number. When the tow truck arrives, check that the number they give you matches your reference number and then you can let them take care of your car. Just don't forget to ask where it's being towed to! And, within 48 hours, visit your nearest police station to get a case number.
