Richard Branson has long been known as a game-changer, money-maker and empire-builder, but now he’s adding ‘planet-saving superhero’ to that impressive list, and he wants you to join him.
In case you’ve missed the memo, the Global Goals is a 17-point plan introduced by the United Nations in 2015 to end poverty, combat climate change and fight injustice and inequality. It’s a plan that 193 governments have agreed, and is backed by leading business and organisations.
Virgin Unite aims to make those goals visible, and to empower normal people to make a difference. To achieve this, they’ve formed the Global Goals Alliance, and are encouraging global citizens to visit the Global Goals Alliance website to join in. Basically, you download the app and transform into a superhero on social media, doing your bit to spread the word.
A number of the goals relate directly to our need for a more sustainable future for the planet, and seeing as we’re focusing on being green in this issue, here’s a rundown:
- Global goal number 7 - Affordable & Clean Energy, aims to “Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all”
- Global goal number 13 - Climate Action, is to “Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts”
- Global goal number 14 - Life Below Water, is to “Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development”
- Global goal number 15 - Life on Land, is to “Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss”
